We’re delighted to announce that SLCP has been successful in obtaining a grant of £13,500, representing 50% of the cost of the installation of an accessible toilet, and of some associated costs of refurbishing and re-opening the disused waiting room. This grant is from the Department for Transport’s ‘Access for All’ Small Schemes programme, and will need to be matched from other sources, but we’re already working to identify these, so we’re confident of being able to use it. Hoping for more good news soon on other funding applications!

Under the expert supervision of the Rev Peter Cresswell from Horsecastle Chapel, our Easter Draw took place on Saturday 3rd April. All the lucky winners have been notified, but for the record the winning tickets were 00246, 00516, 01105, 01149, 00004, and 00271.
Big thanks to our willing band of ticket sellers, and of course to those who kindly donated prizes – Eurostar, First Great Western, ‘theclub’ at Cadbury House, and Mrs Williams. The draw raised close to £1,000 for the project, which all goes towards our all-important ‘matched funding’.
On the subject of funding, we’re in waiting mode now – though we’ve had some encouraging noises in response to one of our applications, we can’t do much except wait and see whether we’ll get the funds we need to start on site this summer.
And moving on to the summer… after our very successful sponsored cycle ride last year, we’re following this up with another ride this year, tying in with North Somerset Council’s ride along the Strawberry Line in National Bike Week. The date will be 20th June, and sponsorship forms will be available on the website, along with more details, very soon. We hope you can join us again for a great day out!

Phew, we’ve just put our bid in to the Big Lottery Fund! This really is a ‘big’ step for us, as we need this funding to be able to start the building works at the station later this year. What’s allowed us to get this application in is agreement with both First Great Western and Network Rail on the lease for the building – this has taken a while, but it was important to get everything covered, and all parties are happy with what’s in place. So now it’s a matter of waiting…
In the meantime, we’ve been busy selling raffle tickets at the station, and chatting to commuters about the project. It’s great to hear people’s ideas, and to get so much support for what the project is trying to do.
We’ll keep you posted on how all our bids are going, and don’t forget you can follow us on Twitter, (and we’re working on a Facebook page), or just post a comment on this website – we’d love to know what you think.

Pick up one of our raffle tickets at Yatton station this week and you could be going further than you thought! We’ve got 8 pairs of Eurostar tickets to give away in our Easter Draw, and we’ll be at the station most mornings this week , so now’s your chance to get that weekend in Paris and support the cafe project too. And if you miss us there, we’ll be at Claverham Village Market on Saturday morning.

Just a few more weeks now to get tickets for our Grand Easter Draw – we’re offering three sets of Eurostar tickets to Paris, a month’s peak membership for two at ‘theclub’ at Cadbury House, a pair of return tickets anywhere on the First Great Western network, and a number of other great prizes.
This is where you can pick up tickets over the next few weeks:

The Impulsoria on the Bridge Inn Sign
Following up on our post from a few days ago, we’re delighted to report that Lucy Evans from the British Library has been able to track down a picture of the elusive Bridge Inn sign showing the even more elusive Impulsoria – and here it is!
Lucy was sent the photo by the ex-Landlord of the Bridge Inn, who now runs the Golden Lion in Wrington. Lucy says “You can imagine that I am over the moon to have this. It is a different and more accurate picture than the only other one in existence and is dated 1850, when the Impulsoria was trialled at Nine Elms.” So the story has a happy ending, and Lucy can get on with writing her book…

The organisers of this month’s ‘curry nite’ on Sunday 28th February at Cleeve Village Hall are kindly donating proceeds to the Strawberry Line Cafe Project – many thanks to them for their support! All are welcome, proceedings start at 3.30pm with drinks and ‘therapy tasters’, with curry served from 4pm to 7pm by Udderley Good 4 U of Yatton. Call 01934 876344 for more details.

That’s a headline you won’t see often, but the story behind it is as follows. We’ve been asked for help by Lucy Evans, Serials Processing Manager at the British Library. She says:
‘… I am writing a biography of an inventor and librarian, Andrea Crestadoro, 1808-1879. I understand that once upon a time the sign for the Bridge Inn, Yatton, was of his machine – the Impulsoria. This was a sort of mobile, horse-powered treadmill, that ran in England at the Nine Elms station, London, in 1850 and also appeared at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851. It disappeared after that, though versions of it still crop up – ecological and kind to horses!
As there is only one other known illustration in existence (of its appearance at Nine Elms) I was very excited to come across the reference to the Bridge Inn sign in the “Wordsworth Dictionary of Pub Names”. Yatton Library have found out from a resident that the sign was there until relatively recently, but the thought it might have been destroyed is really upsetting!
I wonder if you know of any pictures or photographs of this sign? It would be fascinating to know why the Yatton Bridge Inn chose the Impulsoria for the sign – maybe someone saw it at the Crystal Palace Exhibition?’
If you think you can help Lucy, please contact her direct at Lucy.Evans@bl.uk, and let us know too at info@strawberrylinecafe.co.uk. We’ll let you know if the mystery is solved…
