Colin Forse

The memoirs of a railwayman from Yatton have just been published, with all profits supporting the Strawberry Line Cafe. Colin Forse’s career lasted throughout the time of the nationalised railway, as he progressed from a lad’s work in the Yatton West Signal Box and engine shed, through shovelling coal as a fireman on the Cheddar Valley Branch line, to driving HSTs from Bristol to London.  He returned to steam in the 1980s when he became an Inspector on steam trains running over BR track. In an informal, chatty style he tells it how it was, and his many anecdotes shed light on a railwayman’s working life that had its moments of fun as well as hard physical work.

A Life on the Railway  is illustrated with photographs from Colin’s own albums, and includes a useful glossary of the railway terms he uses, and a timeline of BR events that were played out during his career. The book will appeal to anyone interested in social or local history as well as railway enthusiasts.

At £5.95 the book is great value, and is available from Yatton Books and Prints in Yatton High St, (01934 838820) or online at  http://www.abebooks.com/.

We will be organising another Steam in Colour event at Horsecastle Chapel, Yatton on Tuesday 10th November, starting at 7.30pm. Entry will be £2.50. More details to come – but there will be colour slides of local railways and some static exhibits, as well as a small bookstall.

All proceeds will go towards the project. Grateful thanks to the Chapel for allowing us to use their venue free of charge and for the speakers for also donating their time.
